Preventive maintenance software for manufacturing, and the line shift problem

Manufacturing changes the preventive maintenance problem in one specific way that most software ignores. A building's air handler can be serviced any Tuesday. A production line asset can only be serviced when the line is down, and the line is down when production says it is down. So the schedule is not really a calendar, it is a queue of due work waiting for a window, and the software that works in a plant is the software that understands the difference between due and doable.

Due is not the same as scheduled

A plant needs two states, not one. Due means the interval has elapsed. Scheduled means somebody has a window and a person for it. Products that collapse the two into a single date produce a plan that is permanently overdue, everybody learns to ignore the red, and within a quarter the software is telling you nothing you act on. Ask specifically how the product represents work that is due but not yet placed.

Runtime matters more than the calendar here

Plant assets wear by use. A machine running three shifts reaches its service point in a third of the time of one running days only, and a purely calendar-based plan either over-services the quiet machines or under-services the busy ones. Check whether intervals can be driven by hours, cycles or units produced, and how those readings get in: typed at the visit is fine, but it has to be somewhere.

The shutdown is the unit of planning

Most planned work in a plant happens in batches, during a shutdown or a changeover. That means the software's real job is helping you assemble what should be done in the next window: everything due before the window after next, grouped by area, with the parts and the time known. A product that can only show you today's due list is not planning, it is reminding.

Is a CMMS the same as preventive maintenance software?

A CMMS is the broader category: work orders, assets, often parts and labour. Preventive maintenance software is the planning half of it. A plant with a dispatch problem needs the CMMS; a plant whose problem is the plan going stale needs the planning half done well.

How do we get runtime readings into the system without sensors?

Read them at the visit and type them in. It is less precise than a live feed and it is enough to drive an interval, and it costs nothing. Connected readings are worth adding later, when you know which assets the precision actually changes.

Should production see the maintenance schedule?

Yes, and it is usually the single biggest improvement available. Most missed preventive work in a plant is missed because nobody upstream knew it was coming, not because maintenance forgot.
