How many checks should a unit carry?
Enough that a failure would be caught and few enough that every one is genuinely performed. This planner is the arithmetic side of that argument; what a given unit requires is the manufacturer's and your own competent person's.
Why price the failures separately?
Because follow-up work is where the time actually goes. A checklist that takes an hour and generates three hours of follow-up is a three-hour checklist, and pricing only the ticking hides that.
Is a PDF checklist enough?
For running the visit, often yes. What a PDF cannot do is tell you which units are still outstanding this quarter, or what failed on this unit last time, and those are the two questions that come up.
