Maintenance on distributed assets follows different economics from maintenance in a building. When the asset is spread across miles and largely out of sight, the dominant cost of any task is getting to it, and the plan that minimises visits usually beats the plan that is theoretically ideal per asset. Group by geography, not by task type
Indoors it makes sense to do all the filter changes together. On a distributed network it makes sense to do everything at one location together, even where intervals do not naturally align, because the travel is the expense. That means deliberately pulling some work early to coincide with a visit that was happening anyway. A schedule that cannot express 'do this now because we are already there' will be overridden in practice by whoever is planning the route.
Inspection dominates, and much of it is remote
On pipelines and similar assets the bulk of the planned activity is inspection rather than intervention, and an increasing share of it is done without anyone attending, instrumentation, survey and monitoring. That changes the planner's job from scheduling visits to scheduling reviews of data, and it changes what the record has to hold. Requirements for inspection regimes on regulated assets are set by the regulator and the operator's own competent authority, never by a maintenance product.
The record has to survive people moving on
Oil and gas maintenance runs on long-lived assets and shorter-lived staff, so the institutional memory of why an interval is what it is disappears faster than the equipment does. Writing the basis alongside the interval matters more here than almost anywhere else, because in ten years there will be nobody to ask. The same applies to deviations: a task skipped for a good reason and not recorded becomes, some years later, indistinguishable from a task nobody bothered with.
